On the way, you’ll stop at the Patent Shop to grab some local treats—Teng Teng and Ting Ting are must-tries. Lunch comes next at a local restaurant. Samosir’s a gigantic volcanic island—actually, it’s the fifth-largest lake island in the world. It’s the heart of Batak Toba culture, and there are plenty of ancient artifacts left on the island. You’ll visit Tomok Village to see the old tomb of King Sidabutar, then Ambarita Village to see the famous stone chairs and the ancient execution site of King Siallagan (for groups of 14 or more). After the island tour, you’ll return to Parapat for a tasty local lunch. Next, you’re on the road again—this time it’s a scenic 4-hour drive toward Berastagi. Along the way, stop at Simarjarunjung for a taste of ginger tea and fried banana (at your own expense) and take in the view from the Karo Highlands. You'll also stop at SipisoPiso Waterfall, which stands at a stunning 110 meters, and soak in views of Lake Toba from the north side.
