Before You Go & What to Bring: Merapi Sunrise and Borobudur Temple Tour
Heading out for the Merapi Sunrise and Borobudur Temple Tour? Here’s what you’ll want to remember so your trip goes off without a hitch:
- Wear comfy clothes and sturdy shoes. The sunrise Jeep ride up Mount Merapi isn’t a paved stroll—it’s steep, rocky, and a little wild. Good footwear makes all the difference.
- Pack some warm layers. Trust me, it gets chilly up there before sunrise, and you’ll be glad you brought a jacket or sweater.
- Don’t forget sun protection. Even if it’s cold at first, the sun really kicks in later. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses—you’ll need them both for the hike and wandering around Borobudur.
- Bring your camera. You’ll want to catch that sunrise over Mount Merapi and snap some shots of Borobudur’s stunning stonework.
- A small backpack comes in handy. Toss in water, snacks, and any meds you need—just the basics so you’re not weighed down.
- When you visit the temple, dress modestly. It’s a sacred spot, so cover up a bit to show respect.
Get these things sorted, and you can just relax and enjoy the whole experience. Have an amazing trip!
When does the tour start and finish?
We’ll pick you up bright and early at 3:30 or 4 AM, and you’ll be back around 1 PM, depending on the traffic.
What should I wear or bring?
Dress in layers—mornings can be chilly, but it warms up fast. Comfortable clothes are a must, and don’t forget a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and, of course, your camera. You’re going to want proof you were here.
Is the Jeep ride safe?
Absolutely. Our drivers are pros, and your safety always comes first. That said, if you’re pregnant, have back issues, or don’t like heights, it’s better to skip the Jeep part.
How long is the Jeep ride? Is it bumpy?
Count on about 2 hours in the Jeep, with plenty of stops to stretch your legs and snap photos. The ride can get bumpy—these are lava fields, after all—but if something feels too rough, you can always opt out of certain sections.
Is food included?
Food isn’t part of the package, but you’ll have time to grab a bite or some drinks at the Borobudur Temple complex. Feel free to pack your own snacks and some water, too.
