1-Day Itinerary: Merapi Sunrise and Borobudur Temple Tour
Ready for an adventure? This tour packs in two of Yogyakarta’s biggest highlights—Merapi Volcano at sunrise and the legendary Borobudur Temple—all in one day. We’ll kick things off bright and early, heading straight for Merapi, one of Indonesia’s most active volcanoes, to catch that first golden light. Along the way, you’ll hear wild stories and fascinating bits of history about the volcano.
Honestly, if you want to cross off Yogyakarta’s must-see spots in a single, unforgettable day, this is the way to do it. Book your spot and get set for some jaw-dropping views and awesome memories.
Ready for a day you won’t forget? Let’s go! Here’s how your day unfolds:
We’ll leave Yogyakarta when it’s still dark out, hop into a comfy car or van, and then switch to a bumpy 4WD Jeep for the off-road climb. As dawn breaks, you’ll reach the viewpoint just in time to watch the sun rise over Mount Merapi. The landscape glows gold—it’s honestly unreal. Snap some photos, soak it all in, and lock the moment away for later.
Time to head over to Borobudur, one of the world’s most iconic Buddhist temples and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Your guide will walk you through its maze of stone carvings and towering stupas, sharing the stories and cultural secrets hidden in every corner. It’s not just a temple—it’s an experience.
By now, you’ll probably be hungry. Stop for lunch at a local spot near the temple—try the flavors, enjoy the atmosphere. Lunch is self-pay and totally up to you, but it’s a nice way to wind down after a morning packed with sights.
We’ll drive you back to your hotel or wherever you want to be dropped off in Yogyakarta City. That’s a wrap!

Before You Go & What to Bring: Merapi Sunrise and Borobudur Temple Tour
Heading out for the Merapi Sunrise and Borobudur Temple Tour? Here’s what you’ll want to remember so your trip goes off without a hitch:
- Wear comfy clothes and sturdy shoes. The sunrise Jeep ride up Mount Merapi isn’t a paved stroll—it’s steep, rocky, and a little wild. Good footwear makes all the difference.
- Pack some warm layers. Trust me, it gets chilly up there before sunrise, and you’ll be glad you brought a jacket or sweater.
- Don’t forget sun protection. Even if it’s cold at first, the sun really kicks in later. Bring a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses—you’ll need them both for the hike and wandering around Borobudur.
- Bring your camera. You’ll want to catch that sunrise over Mount Merapi and snap some shots of Borobudur’s stunning stonework.
- A small backpack comes in handy. Toss in water, snacks, and any meds you need—just the basics so you’re not weighed down.
- When you visit the temple, dress modestly. It’s a sacred spot, so cover up a bit to show respect.
Get these things sorted, and you can just relax and enjoy the whole experience. Have an amazing trip!
Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers:
We’ll pick you up bright and early at 3:30 or 4 AM, and you’ll be back around 1 PM, depending on the traffic.
Dress in layers—mornings can be chilly, but it warms up fast. Comfortable clothes are a must, and don’t forget a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and, of course, your camera. You’re going to want proof you were here.
Absolutely. Our drivers are pros, and your safety always comes first. That said, if you’re pregnant, have back issues, or don’t like heights, it’s better to skip the Jeep part.
Count on about 2 hours in the Jeep, with plenty of stops to stretch your legs and snap photos. The ride can get bumpy—these are lava fields, after all—but if something feels too rough, you can always opt out of certain sections.
Food isn’t part of the package, but you’ll have time to grab a bite or some drinks at the Borobudur Temple complex. Feel free to pack your own snacks and some water, too.

She took us on the volcano jeep tour and to Pindul Cave tubing, and honestly made the whole experience unforgettable. From the beginning she was attentive, fun, kind, and genuinely lovely to spend time with. She looked after us so well throughout the trip, always making sure we were comfortable, enjoying ourselves, and getting the most out of every place we visited. She also took incredible photos and videos for us - some of the best memories from our trip! Nothing ever felt rushed, and her positive energy made the whole day even more special.
